About Us/Hakkinda

Timeline and Project Synopsis

Floating World Projects’ current project examines cross-cultural collaboration between Turkish and American artists working in a broad range of mediums. Over the past four years, we have forged relationships with visual artists and musicians in Istanbul with the goal of producing a project based on international artistic partnership. The aim of the project is to explore the many aspects of cross-cultural identity through visual and audio collaboration. The Project consists of four components: collaborative visual artwork, a video component, a series of audio recordings and a multi-media exhibition.

Visual Art

Three artists from the United States and four from Turkey are collaborating in a residency in the summer of 2010 at Mimar Sinan University in central Istanbul. The residency will be focused on collaborating with a select group of contemporary visual artists who specialize in enamel printmaking and etching techniques for glass. Our discussion is about the similarities and differences between our respective cities and cultures. We will begin by photographing the city of Istanbul and translating that imagery onto a series of glass panels with screen-printing, photo emulsion and etching techniques. The aim of this project is for artists to illustrate their perspectives of both Istanbul and New York and to question the socially constructed perspectives that currently exist. In the spring of 2011 we will reconvene in the United States to complete the work in a similar residency.

Video

The video component will consist of eight time-lapsed video recordings produced by four artists from Istanbul and four from New York. The recordings will each document a 24-hour period during summer, autumn, winter, and spring. Each video will document a intimate perspective of each city and will be a part of the final installation in 2011. For the final installation, these videos will be projected on the reverse side of eight, large-scale glass satellite dishes that will be fabricated for the show. The dishes function as a symbol of communication, miscommunication and the role of technology in how we process visual information. A DVD of the video recordings will be available with the finished book of the project.

Audio

In the summer 0f 2009, we traveled to Istanbul with a mobile recording studio and compiled a series of raw recordings in order to create an “auditory library” of Istanbul. Our recordings included sounds of the city, songs from a wide range of contemporary, folk and street musicians. Once the first session of recordings was complete they were brought into our studios in New York added to and edited by New York Sound Engineers and musicians. In the summer of 2011 a series of recordings from New York Musicians will travel to Istanbul for Turkish musicians to edit. The final product will be a published compilation and the concept is to have our visual work accompanied by an audio collaboration.

Proje Takvimi ve Özeti

Floating World Projects çeşitli branşlarda çalışan Türk ve Amerikalı sanatçıların kültürler arası ortak çalışmalarını irdelemektedir.

Video

Video içeriği İstanbul'dan ve New York'dan dörder sanatçının gerçekleştireceği sekiz adet hızlandırılmış video kaydından oluşacak.

Kayıtlarımız tamamlandığında New York'a götürüldüler ve burada New York'lu ses mühendisleri ve müzisyenleri tarafından üzerlerinde çalışıldı.
